Fun Facts About Photos: The 2024 Edition
Some statistics used on this page were sourced from https://photutorial.com/photos-statistics/ and specific credit to creative and researcher MATIC BROZ
It’s 2024, the age of digital photos. Since FujiFilm released the first fully digital camera in 1988, now to the point where almost everyone with a phone effectively has a camera within reach, and photo enthusiasts have professional cameras or better. On top of that, people have a lot of other image-capturing devices such as drones, tablets, wearable cameras such as GoPros, webcams, etc. With all of this technology at our fingertips, we’re capable of taking a lot of photos. So it might be reasonable to ask “how many photos will be taken this year?" and "how will people store them all?”
To begin answering these questions, we got in touch with Photutorial. They’re interested in photos as well, and they had some fascinating data to share. As it turns out, humanity took 1.81 trillion photos in 2023, and here are some trends and statistics to consider (again, credit to Mr. Broz, in his article dated July 05, 2024):
At first glance, those seem like some staggering numbers...and they really, REALLY are. So let's deep a little deeper on how much we are talking about.
How Many Are in a Trillion? A Big Number Explained
A trillion is
ONE MILLION MILLIONS...mathematically, that is the number ten (10) the twelfth power, expressed as 10(12) or, if you wrote it out on a paper, 1,000,000,000,000. Where I come from, that's a LOT...of ANYTHING. But let's try to put that in perspective:
...and the red-square graphic only represents one BILLION...
one TRILLION would be equal to ONE THOUSAND of those billion squares
Fun Facts About How Many Photos We Take
Fun Fact 1: If you took one photo every second, it would take you over 61,516 years to snap the number of photos humans are expected to take in 2024.
Fun Fact 2: If you had 1.94 trillion adults standing on each others' shoulders, they would extend well past the planet Saturn and be on their way to the planet Uranus.
Fun Fact 3: If you divide that number by the population of planet Earth (about 8 billion people), you’ll see that each person averages only 242.5 pictures each -- that's every man, woman and child on the entire planet.
How Many Digital Photos Are Out There?
In 2022 approximately 7,375,400,000,000 digital photos were tucked away on hard drives and other storage formats worldwide. Assuming you stored one picture every second, it would take about 233,872 years to reach that number.
Photos Are Taken, Shared and Stored...But Are We Protecting Them?
Those numbers should be a "wake-up call"...even with all of our new digital technologies, those numbers for loss are still WAY too high. But you can WIN against those odds by digitizing and properly storing your precious family memories TODAY.
This picture always makes me wonder if the people in that crowd are so busy TAKING pictures that they aren't giving enough thought to PRESERVING those pictures? Hmmm...
